What is a DNS Zone?

Domain Name System (DNS) zone is a logical partitions DNS database via DNS can easily access and managed which administrative responsibility has been delegated to a single control.

In the DNS zone, data divided into a manageable set of data DNS zones. All DNS zone are organized in a hierarchical tree-like order of cascading lower-level domains, form the DNS namespace.

In other words, DNS data divided into manageable sets of data in a logical partition called the DNS zone. DNS Zone is a file of DNS that divided into multiple parts of delegation control.

The authority over each DNS zone is delegated to a legal entity or organization such as a country-code top-level domain registry or a company or individual registered to use a certain sub-domain within the system.

DNS zones may consist of only one domain, or of many domains and subdomains Depending on the administrative rights delegated to a certain entity.

There are three types of DNS zone that are following-

Forward Lookup Zones

Forward Lookup zones used for name to IP address resolutions.

Reverse Lookup Zones

Reverse Lookup Zone used for IP to name resolutions.

In forwarding Lookup zones and Reverse Lookup zones you can categories zone in three categories-

Primary Zone

The primary zone is the main key of the DNS server because this is a read-write copy of DNS server. In Primary Zone you can Create, Delete, Modify the records.

In other word, In Primary zone creates a copy of zon that can be updated directly on the server.

Primary Server installed on the server and each and every environment you can install only one primary server. If you want to changes anything you need to rights of Primary Database where install.

Secondary Zone

The secondary zone is a read-only copy of the DNS record. In the Secondary Zone, you can only view the records. For read, write, the modify you should coordinate with the primary zone.

The secondary zone provides redundancy of name resolutions and your client will be resolved the query from different DNS. Secondary Zone DNS can take a copy of the zone from Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, and AD-integrated Zones.

Stub Zone

Stub-Zone likes a Secondary Zone DNS and also read-only copy of Primary DNS. Stub Zone is a pointer towards the DNS server of another Zone.

In the Stub zone, you can create pointer name server records in the Stub zone. Stub zone used for processing any query fast.
